House Rules - G C Scott

One of the questions people often have who are not themselves into bondage (and a question that House Rules tries to answer) is why people would do it. They wonder how it could be that someone would willingly submit themselves to another human being and allow themselves to be dominated. It’s a good question if you think about it. To the uninitiated, it does seem as if the person who is doing the dominating is using psychological tricks to gain control over their subject rather than actually letting them make their own decisions.

Richard is a young Brit in Hamburg and he finds himself in a rather odd relationship with Helena, the niece of Margaret Wagner. On the one hand, he’s in love with her, but on the other hand, he wonders why she would willingly allow herself to be under Margaret’s thumb. He decides that he is going to break her away from that world and get her to see the error of her ways. However, he doesn’t quite understand the world he has gotten himself into and he ends up with more problems than he bargained for. In the end though, he realizes what the true value of bondage is.

The pace in House Rules may be a bit slower than some people would like it to be, however over-all, I found it to be a solid read. The book does have the sex and lust one would expect from an erotica book; however it attempts to take a deeper look at the whole concept of bondage and allows one to really use his or head to consider all the aspects of the fetish. For that, the author is to be applauded. Too often, bondage books are all about well, bondage and how horrible one human being can act toward another. Here, we get a refreshingly honest look at the subject and I highly recommend it.
