When people first hear the name Mistress of the East, or see the cover of the book, with a woman showing a bare back, the first reaction that (some) people have is – ooh look, a porn novel! Well, that’s not really accurate. Is there sex here? Sure? Is there lust and love? To paraphrase Sara Palin (who would probably never read a book like this, but certainly should), you betchya! But the sex and the lust and the love is not there for gratuitous sexual desire. Instead, it exists to draw you deeper into the world of this fascinating novel.
The story follows the adventures of Thomas Rowley, an American in 1860s China who is captured by local soldiers and given as a slave (no, not a sex slave – at least, not only a sex slave anyway) to “Little Sister.” She slowly gets him to trust her and he slowly realizes his desire to succumb to her every desire. The story spends a great deal of time telling us about the experience of being put into slavery (a scary experience for a 19 year old boy from the States) and shows the author’s intense desire to get things just right in describing what China was like at the time.
Personally, I loved this book; however it will not appeal to everyone. It’s a book of erotica and that means that the story is adult themed and has sex in it, but those want to read this as a prelude to playing with themselves (both men and women) would be better off looking elsewhere. Those however who would like to lose themselves in a beautiful world of long ago and learn about love and lust and what it means to submit to a mistress should run, not walk to buy a copy of this amazing piece of literature.
